In the midst of all the hustle and bustle of daily life there will inevitably be a time where you just don't feel like cooking. But after a long day, we also don't always feel like going out either. The idea of navigating the challenges of take out while being on a gluten free diet might feel extremely intimidating. However, I'm here to offer you some tips for making take out more manageable again. Here are a few ideas of what to order:
There are a few places that now offer gluten free pizza, AND they even deliver!
Domino's is my own personal favorite. (I know, as a New Yorker I never thought I'd hear myself saying that...lol.) It's cheaper and it tastes pretty darn good for gluten free pizza. You can get a personal small pizza for $10.99. They also make sure to properly label the boxes and even keep them in separate warming bags. Overall, I've been very pleased with Domino's service towards the gluten free community.
Z-Pizza- Also offers gluten free pizzas for $11.25. I've heard good things from my gluten free friends about Z-Pizza. I've tried ordering from them once and did not have the best experience though. They did not properly label the boxes and the delivery guy was clueless about which individual pizza was the gluten free one. We had to call and complain and were eventually accommodated, but it was a hassle. I'll try again someday soon and let you know if my experience is better.
People for some reason are really afraid to try Chinese food. However, there are actually plenty of ways to make Chinese food work for you. I told you about the San J peanut sauce the other day. There are a number of gluten free San J sauces that you can stock in your pantry. Then ordering Chinese food is a breeze. You can get any of their rice or rice noodle dishes, without the sauce. I usually stick to the fried rice dishes and just have them cook it dry. Then I doctor it up with my own gluten free sauces when it gets to the house. Egg drop soup is also usually an option, as long as it is cooked with corn starch instead of flour. You just want to be cautious if language is a barrier.
There are tons of options with Mexican food if you ask the right questions. As long as you watch the sauces most of the menus are made with corn and beans! For the fastest take out option though, you can easily go to Chipotle or Baja Fresh if you get their burrito bowls.
This might not be the first option that springs to mind. Yet, Indian food can be a gluten free person's best friend! Again watch the sauces, but for the most part their curry sauces are ALL gluten free. So you can get a curry dish with meat, rice and a great sauce.
