Since being diagnosed I've had to be really careful where I get my flavored coffee beverages. I've unfortunately been "glutened" by Starbucks now twice. So not to trash talk Starbucks, but I now boycott them because I just can't risk it. In doing research I've found that they will not release their ingredients to the public because they change too often and each location is different. Their advice is to ask the local barista about the ingredients. Yet, on one of my trips when I tested this theory the high school girl working there gave me a blank stare and said "What, like you can't have milk?" All I will say is drink at your own risk and definitely stay away from any of their mocha beverages. The mocha definitely contains wheat!
One of the bright sides from this boycott is I've scouted out more locally owned places, all of which are ten times better than any Starbucks!
One of my favorite local hot spots is Grounded Coffee Shop. A real local gem, it's cozy with couches to veg and a train table for the kids. They are family owned and the owner, Candy, has been on premises every time I've been there. She is extremely conscious of the gluten free community needs and is able to answer questions about every ingredient that goes into anything on premises. They brew all kinds of flavored coffees and teas and even have seasonal specials. They also have a full display of desserts (including gluten free offerings), all of which are baked on premises. Make sure you try the creme brulee ;)
They also have a great variety of lunch offerings. For the gluten free community they have a number of salads every day. If you're looking for a hot meal, there is also a homemade delicious soup each day, oftentimes gluten free. I'd say I've been lucky 3 out of 4 times on the soup being gluten free. And each time I am, it's been totally worth it!
I'm confident each time walking in here though because the staff are all regulars and anyone I ask about ingredients is either able to answer right away, or find an answer for me in minutes. So definitely take time to check out Grounded Coffee Shop. They are offering specialty gluten free baked goods for the holidays including coconut macaroons and meringue cookies.
