One of the families I babysit for has a daughter who is extremely allergic to peanuts. I also have a dangerous allergy to mangoes and cashews. My throat swells and closes up when I come into contact with them. With allergies like this becoming more and more common and even just with a community like us who are trying to avoid gluten in all of our meals, the need for information about how restaurants are handling our food is crucial.
I was told of this website/mobile app last night. Although it is flawed in that it bases all of its information on consumer opinion and each of these opinions is based on a different need. I mean someone whose allergy is not as severe as a throat closing up is not going to necessarily need quite as much attention paid to their allergy as someone who does. Also unfortunately, none of us know what exactly is going on in the kitchen away from our tables. However, this app is at least a step in the right direction. I know DC Healthy Bites is working to create a database where the restaurants are sharing their menu information and are rated on their awareness and attention to handling consumers with allergies.
The word is out there and maybe someday we can all go to a restaurant and order without worrying. In the meantime, what tools do you use to find safe dining experiences?
